Wonder

Meet Thomas, an eight-year-old boy, by his father’s side, at the rail,
on the Friendship V, talking a blue streak and gazing out at the calm sea.
Suddenly with no warning, a sixty foot long, 40-ton Humpback whale
rockets out of the water in full breech, pauses briefly in mid-air
and lands with a gigantic splash.

Thomas stops talking, his eyes wide, his mouth still open.
This is a moment of wonder he will never forget.
For that moment he is completely outside himself.

Wonder is defined as a mix of awe, astonishment and admiration.
My goodness.
It is said that as we age, we lose our sense of wonder.
Maybe we just lose our ability to be completely outside ourselves for a moment.

The Milky Way on a cold clear winter’s night.
A breath quietly watched.

Thomas doesn’t speak for a long time.
Wonderment can do that to you.
